Equal Opportunities Policy

An equal opportunity policy outlines an organisations commitment to the equality of opportunity with regard to policies and practices for employees and potential employees.

Employers have a statutory duty under the Equality Act 2010 to implement a policy to ensure that no employee or applicant will be treated less favourably on the grounds of their sex, marriage/civil partnership, race, having or not having dependents, pregnancy and maternity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, religion, belief or a lack of religion or belief.

The policy should cover all areas of employment: recruitment and selection, terms and conditions, promotion, transfer, training, appraisal and selection for redundancy.

The policy should outline the meaning of; equality of opportunity, discrimination and harassment, what sort of behaviours and attitudes should be promoted, and also what procedures and actions employees can take if they feel they have been discriminated against, victimised or harassed.
